Fair Trials Europe in cooperation with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights, the European Institute of Public Administration (Luxembourg), the Centre for European Constitutional Law (Greece) and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (Ireland) will host on 18 February 2021 a webinar on alternatives to EAWs and pre-trial detention. The event is part of the EU Project “EAW-ALT: Addressing the overuse of pre-trial detention and the disproportionate use of EAW with alternative cross-border mechanisms”
After a presentation of the key results of our research, this webinar will bring together practitioners to discuss the resistance towards the use of alternatives to EAWs for prosecution, and identify promising practices in the context of the current digitalisation of justice agenda. In a second panel, we will turn to the more general continued overreliance on detention at pre-trial stage in cross-border proceedings where the risk of absconding is nearly automatically presumed for non-nationals or non-residents.
Nora Katona, Senior Researcher at Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights, will be moderating the second part of the event.
