PANEL DISCUSSION: “Global Prison Crisis: Protecting Human Dignity”

In the context of the 20th anniversary of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights, the Institute will hold a panel debate with experts from different parts of the world focusing on the evolving global prison crisis and its impact on the particularly vulnerable dignity of persons in places of deprived liberty. The expertise of the panel members will allow the presentation of the main areas of concern in the field of torture prevention in prisons as well as the illustration of best practice examples in various regions of the world.

The panellists include Manfred Nowak (Scientific Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights and former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, 2004-2010), Hina Jilani (Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and human rights activist, co-founder of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and the Women’s Action Forum), Dirk Van Zyl Smit (Professor of Comparative and International Penal Law, University of Nottingham, and former expert adviser to the Council of Europe on the new European Prison Rules) and Santiago A. Canton (Director of RFK Partners for Human Rights, Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights).
