ALDE Conference: Rethinking Development Cooperation

Although various studies are available on how European development cooperation influences the economic growth in African countries, these studies often yield to contradictory results. There is no conclusive evidence that economic growth is strengthened in any sustaible way through these assistance programs. The debate on development cooperation boils down to the question on whether Europe has to increase its aid money in order for stability and prosperity to emmerge in African states and if yes, how much would be needed.

In the framework of this conference co-organized by the ALDE-Group Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament folllowing focus areas will be pointed out: Is development cooperation of this form beneficial or is it only a cover-up for the lack of solutions and sustainable measures? Is it justified to ask: Are we helping in the wrong way? Development cooperation should not be about buying our way out of our responsibility but rather about sustainable investments.
The keynote will be delivered by Chika Ezeanya-Esiobu. Barbara Linder (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights) will be one of the panelists.
