Successful implementation of anti-discrimination Twinning project still before accession of Croatia to the EU

On 10.06.2013, on the eve of Croatia becoming the 28th member of the European Union, the final event of the Twinning project “Establishing a comprehensive system for anti-discrimination protection” took place in Zagreb at the premises of the Parliament of the Republic of Croatia.

Among others, Mr Nenad Stazić, Vice-President of the Croatian Parliament, the Austrian Ambassador Ms Andrea Ikić-Böhm, Ms Lora Vidović, the Ombudswoman, Mr Branko Sočanac, Head of the Office for Human Rights and Rights of National Minorities and Mr Hannes Tretter, Scientific Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights delivered a speech.

The final event gave the project team of the two beneficiary institutions, the Office of the Ombudswoman and the Croatian Government's Office for Human Rights and Rights of National Minorities and their Austrian partner organisation, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights, the opportunity to present lessons learned, the results of the project and challenges ahead. The presentations of Ms Barbara Liegl, the Resident Twinning Adviser, Ms Tena Šimonović Einwalter, Co-ordinator for the area of non-discrimination, Office of the Ombudswoman and Ms Lana Velimirović Vukalović, Adviser at the Government Office for Human Rights and Rights of National Minorities focused on two core publications of the project:

  1. Guidelines for detecting cases of discrimination targeting staff of public institutions aiming at tackling the problem of under-reporting,
  2. Handbook on how to collect equality data targeting staff of public institutions collecting relevant data aiming at improving the cooperation of the Office for Human Rights and Rights of National Minorities with relevant data collectors.

About 60 people participated in the event. Among them were high ranking officials, representatives of civil society organisations and journalists.
