The minority conflict in Carinthia
Eva Simmler and Thomas Korschil, A/SLO 2004, DVD; 85min.
In German & Slovenian with English Subtitles.
Synopsis:
The documentary “Article 7” looks into the situation of the Solvenian minority in Carinthia and the protection of their rights. The title refers to article 7 in the Austrian State Treaty which provides for the obligation of the Austrian State to ensure the rights of the Slovenian and Croat minority living in Carinthia, Burgenland, and Styria. The State Treaty itself was pivotal for the country to regain its independence after World War II in 1955; some of the provisions eminating from Article 7 have not been implemented until today.
The documentary goes back to the 1970 years when the issue of bilingual street signs triggered public outcry and forceful protests by the German speaking population and challenged the then dominant perception of Austria as a mono-ethnic country. Contemporay witnesses, political activists and comprehensive archive material portrait recent Austrian history and its reverberations and relevance today.
All films will be screened at the Top Kino, Rahlgasse 1, 1060 Vienna and will
be followed by a panel discussion held in English.
Tickets are for free, but have to be picked up least 30 minutes before the start.
