In February 2008, the research platform Human Rights in the European Context was established at the University of Vienna. It assembles academics of 12 departments of the University of Vienna with the purpose of strengthening the inter-disciplinary research on the topic of Human Rights in Europe.
The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights serves as the platform's centre of communication and coordination.

Austria’s biggest Human Rights Film Festival this human world will take place for the fifth time from the 29th of November to the 9th of December 2012. As a long-standing cooperation partner, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights (BIM) is proud to present a series of documentaries on key human rights issues within the framework of its film series CINEMA AND HUMAN RIGHTS.
All film screenings will be followed by panel discussions held in English with distinguished experts in the relevant fields.
In the context of the 20th anniversary of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights, the Institute will hold a panel debate with experts from different parts of the world focusing on the evolving global prison crisis and its impact on the particularly vulnerable dignity of persons in places of deprived liberty. The expertise of the panel members will allow the presentation of the main areas of concern in the field of torture prevention in prisons as well as the illustration of best practice examples in various regions of the world.

In India, China and many other parts of the world today, girls are killed and abandoned; female foetuses are aborted, simply because they are female. The United Nations estimates as many as 200 million girls in the world today have “disappeared” because of this so-called “gendercide”. This is rooted in traditions which go back centuries and are sustained by deeply ingrained cultural dynamics which, in combination with government policies, allow the continuation of these brutal practices. Shot on location in India and China, “It’s a Girl” reveals the truth of the situation. It asks why this is happening, and why so little is being done to save girls and women.
