On the occasion of Croatia's approaching EU accession Herwig HÖLLER (Journalist of FALTER), Hannes TRETTER (Member of the Research Platform "Human Rights in the European Context", University of Vienna; Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights) and Luka MAĐERIĆ (Head of the Office for Human Rights of the Croatian Government) discussed the role of the EU integration policy on democratization processes and the promotion of human rights in the enlargement countries.
The event held on 18th May 2011 was moderated by Anna MÜLLER-FUNK (Research Platform "Human Rights in the European Context", University of Vienna; Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights) and took place in cooperation with the European Parliament Information Office in Austria and the European Commission Representation in Austria as well as the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna.
In the discussion it became clear that since the start of the EU integration process Croatia has initiated a lot of reforms (including in the field of human rights) within a short period. The EU Interim Progress Report Croatia 2011 recognizes the considerable reform efforts. However, further work remains to be done.
Gordan BAKOTA (Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia in Austria), Richard KÜHNEL (Head of the European Commission Representation in Austria) and Neven MADEY (Permanent Representative of the Republic of Croatia at the OSCE) were present at the event.
