The Pedagogical Salon: Citizenship Education

"A liberal state under the rule of law exists under conditions, which itself cannot guarantee", notes E. -W. Böckenförde and  asks, how such a state can be upheld in times of crisis. What does this mean in times of populism and fake news? What is the value of democracy and human rights when "easy" solutions have the upper hand? Böckenförde believes that this is imbedded in the beliefs and values of citizens. Such values must be taught. In Austrian schools there is no compulsory seperate subject of Citizenship Education. Which criterias must be met by citizenship education to master current challenges in our society?

On the 16th of January 2018 Patricia Hladschik, director of Zentrum polis – Politik Lernen in der Schule (Austrian Centre for Citizenship Education in Schools) will be one of the panelists discussing the topic of citizenship education.
