HUMAN RIGHTS TALK: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: 2nd chance or last chance?

Sustainable Development Goals

We cordially invite you to the second panel discussion of the semester: “HUMAN RIGHTS TALK: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: 2nd chance or last chance?” on Wednesday, 25 November 2015 at 19:00 in the Dachgeschoß Juridicum (Schottenbastei 10-16, 1010 Vienna). The event is organized by the Research Centre Human Rights of the University of Vienna and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights in cooperation with the Swiss Embassy in Austria.

On the 25th September 2015, the United Nations passed the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, with the aim of contributing to global development, encouraging human well-being and protecting the environment. This should be achieved through the implementation of 17 agreed Sustainable Development Goals. The 2030 agenda builds on the Millennium Development Goals, on which international development cooperation has been based since the year 2000. The fight against poverty and hunger remains at the core of the agenda, a crucial role is played in addition by the fight against climate change and societal goals, such as the reduction of inequality between and within states and the need for sustainable patterns of consumption in the global north. What new chances and opportunities the 2030 agenda offers will be discussed by Daniel BACHER (Dreikönigsaktion), Sabin BIERI (Centre for Development and Environment, University of Bern), Karin LUKAS (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights) and Wolfram SCHAFFAR (Department of International Development, the University of Vienna) Manfred NOWAK (Research Centre Human Rights, Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights) will be moderating the discussion.

The event marks the occasion of the Expo Milano ‘Feeding the planet, energy for life’. The 2030 agenda includes topics which are also key areas of focus of the expo, such as the right to water, food and energy.

Kindly observe that this event is held in German! Following the discussion, the Research Centre Human Rights, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute and the Swiss Embassy would like to invite you to join the subsequent reception.

The admission is free, for logistical reasons we ask you to kindly register at humanrightstalk@univie.ac.at!
