Research work at the BIM deals with a broad range of human rights relevant topics.
Based on its work since 1993 and in light of upcoming developments within the international human rights discourse the BIM focuses its expertise on the following areas:

Human Rights in Development Co-operation and Business / Digital Rights
European Neighbourhood and Integration Policy
Anti-discrimination, Diversity and Asylum
Women’s Rights, Child Rights, Anti-Trafficking
Human Rights Education / Education for Democratic Citizenship
Besides the topic-wise structured focuses current human rights questions at international, European and national level are on the institute's research agenda, specifically dealt with in events and publication projects.
Following the international final conference of the COST Action IS0702 “The Role of the EU in UN Human Rights Reform” in September 2012 in Vienna, where the recommendations of the COST Action where finalized and presented, a meeting took place in Brussels now where these final recommendations where discussed with policy makers from the EU.
